Lithuanian Art:

Madison Vilnius Sister Cities is actively pursuing its goal of bringing Lithuanian art to Madisonians. One of our past expositions was dedicated to Lithuanian textiles.

Lithuanian Textiles, Past and Present:
Madison-Vilnius Sister Cities with the help of Madiso Public Libraries were proud to bring Lithuanian Textiles, Past and Present to the people of Madison. The exhibit was located at the main branch of the Madison Public Library, February 4 though 24.

The exhibit included hand made textiles dating from the 1920s to the present. Geometric and other designs of celestial bodies and plants are prominent in Lithuanian art and create a unique "point of view." The handiwork included napkins, table runners, and tablecloths woven with threads of silk, cotton, and linen. Also featured were sashes and the national folk costumes of several regions of Lithuania. These articles reflected the functional aspect of the art and their evolution into the more decorative one. That was the result of Lithuanian artisans who practiced an ancient folk art, passed down through generations.
